A roll-off is the open-top steel container you see on job sites and driveways — it rolls off the back of a specialised truck on rails, sits where the driver sets it, and rolls back on when it is full. It is the most flexible piece of equipment in waste hauling, and it is what we run.
We stock 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yard roll-offs. The right one depends less on how much stuff you have and more on what that stuff weighs, which is where most people get the decision wrong.
Volume versus weight — the mistake that costs money
A 40 yard container filled with concrete, brick or roofing shingles will exceed legal transport weight long before it is full. A 10 yard container filled with the same material can be too heavy for a truck to lift safely. Heavy debris goes in small containers; light, bulky debris goes in big ones.
That is not a sales line. It is a road-legal limit and a physics problem, and any hauler telling you to fill a 30 yard box with masonry is either inexperienced or about to hand you a bill you did not expect.
How much room the truck needs
For a clean delivery we want roughly 60 feet of straight approach, about 10 feet of width, and around 23 feet of vertical clearance so the hoist can raise the container. Low limbs, sagging service lines and carport roofs are the three things that most often stop a drop.
None of that is a hard barrier on most Harrisburg properties, but it is worth walking the route before delivery day. If the numbers do not work, a street placement with the appropriate City permit usually does.
- About 60 feet of clear straight-line approach
- Around 10 feet of clear width for the container and truck
- Roughly 23 feet of overhead clearance during the lift
- Firm, level ground — soft turf and fresh concrete are risks
- A clear swing path for the rear door if you plan to walk debris in
Loading a roll-off properly
Load heavy material flat on the floor first, break down bulky items so they nest, and keep everything below the top rail. An overfilled container cannot be tarped, and an untarped load cannot legally leave your property — which means a wasted trip for our driver and a delay for you.
The rear barn door swings open on every container we run, so you can walk material in on a plank rather than heaving it over the side. On a long job, that saves your back more than any other single decision.
Sizing tip: All five sizes — 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yard — are available for delivery across Harrisburg and Dauphin County. Not sure? Call (717) 678-7256 and describe the job — we will size it in under two minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size roll-off do I need?
For a single room, 10 or 15 yards. For a full floor or a large clear-out, 20 yards. For construction and commercial volume, 30 yards. For bulky, light debris like siding or insulation, 40 yards. Heavy materials belong in the smaller boxes regardless of volume.
Can I move the container once it is delivered?
No. Repositioning a loaded roll-off requires the truck. If you need it moved, call us and we will send a driver — dragging it with a vehicle damages the container, your surface, and usually both.
How full can I fill it?
To the top rail, level. Anything above the rail cannot be tarped, and an untarped load cannot legally travel. Our driver will not take an overfilled container until it is levelled off.
Do you deliver on Saturdays?
Yes. Saturday delivery is available and popular with homeowners running weekend projects. Book ahead — Saturdays fill up first.
